Hi all. I'm new to 3D printing. I recently got my hands on a Makerbot Cupcake CNC with Gen 3 electronics on it. The person I got it from (on long term loan) also gave me a set of acme lead screws to install to rid the machine of it's Z-axis wobbling. Anyways, I installed the lead screws and experienced some binding. I am feeling a bit embarrassed at the moment because I should have known better but during my troubleshooting of the problem, the stepper driver appears to have blown. When I turn the power on, the green led glows dimly and quickly goes out and the 7805 gets hot! I have replaced the 7805 with other 7805's I had from RC motor ESC's. The result was the same.
I have a few questions that maybe someone could help me out with.
1. I assume I have blown something on the stepper driver but I don't know what. Any ideas? Can I troubleshoot the issue?
2. I need to now replace the stepper driver to get the machine working, especially since it's on loan. Ideally, I'd like to just replace it with a v2.3 gen 3 driver but they are obviously obsolete and tough to come by ( a quick search revealed nothing immediate). If I can't get a gen 3 stepper driver, what are my options? Can I just drop in a Gen 4 driver? Or use a pololu?
I'm kind of bummed out since I was hoping to carry on with my adventure!
