A dedicated IC will likely be faster than a cheap uC. There are several dedicated control IC's that work with external FET's. You will need the big FET's and major heatsinks regardless of how you do the controll. The driver IC's have all of the nasty "shutdown when this happens" sort of stuff built into them. For a couple bucks, they do a lot. The dedicated control IC's also have the high side drivers built into them. With a micro you still will need to work all that stuff out.

If you have 12V 7A motors (taking data from several posts) running them at speed will be a bit exciting. The dirver ultimately will be in the KW range if you are after any sort of speed:

Two windings at 7A each x 12V = 168 W at DC.
Run at 1,000 rpm you likely are above 800W.
