I have a similar issue where my setup (ramps 1.4 + A4988 drivers + marlin) are set to full step mode. I got the motors moving the correct number of rotations for the desired distance by adjusting the steps per unit and bringing the mm/sec into a reasonable range. But in full step mode the motor motion is just not smooth enough and very loud.
Previously my drivers were automatically set to 1/16 steps, I thought this was done digitally through marlin, but aparantly thats not the case for these drivers. Could the OP point me to any documentation about these "jumpers" I might need to hard wire the step mode?
