Torque is directly proportional to the current.
nophead, can you provide an authoritative reference to back up that statement? I searched the web for references to torque vs. current for stepper motors, but found very little, and nothing that I regard as authoritative. The magnetic force between two poles varies as the square of the strength of the magnetic field between them, which is why I suspect that torque might increase as the square of current, at least until saturation of the ironwork becomes significant.
