Echo: SD init failed on RUMBA

I have been trying to set a RUMBA up with a smart controller LCD unit from g3d (blue board). I have loaded Marlin firmware onto the RUMBA. I have managed to get the LCD and click knob to work perfectly. However there's one small issue. I can't seem to read from the SD card. When I insert the SD card, the console on Pronterface will display "echo: SD init failed". The LCD will read "card inserted". However when I use the click knob to access the menu, at the bottom of the menu it says "No card".

I tried this smart controller module on my RAMPS, loaded with Marlin, and it works perfectly. The bottom of the menu will say "print from SD card" instead of "No card".

Additionally I have a SD card module which I fixed to the RUMBA instead of the smart controller, and when the RUMBA is connected to pronterface, it also says echo: SD init fail. This also happens when I try to use pronterface to print from SD.

my SD card is properly formatted (note: it works perfectly with the RAMPS. the RAMPS can see that there is a test file inside, and I can use pronterface to upload files to the SD card without issue)

I have done the basic stuff, I have uncommented #define G3D_PANEL and #define SDSUPPORT in configurations.h. are there other things that I need to do specifically for RUMBA? or can anyone refer me to a relevant guide?
